A Butch Patrick overdose is making news this morning. Many will remember Butch Patrick as Eddie Munster on "The Munsters." Eddie is all grown up! The man has been dealing with a life long drug addiction, and that addiction almost took his life. What sent him spiraling down recently? The sale of one of the jackets he wore on the 60s television series. The jacket was apparently stolen from him and put up for auction.
The sale was recently aired on television as part of the new SyFy series "Hollywood Treasure." On the episode, a woman that wrote a biography of the actor put the coat up for auction. Once Patrick learned of the auction online, this sent him back down. The auction was announced on October 26th, and it took place on November 6th. Patrick started on a nearly fatal binge of drugs and drinking after that, and it nearly cost him his life. This was shortly after he had checked himself out of rehab after putting himself in voluntarily.
There is good news in all of this. The actor has checked himself back into a clinic in Orange County, California. Friends and family staged an intervention, and he agreed to go into the 30 day treatment program to detox and get clean. According to Ace Showbiz, Jodi Ritzen, his representative, said the following: "With the amount of alcohol and drugs that Patrick was consuming, especially having only one kidney, he is lucky to be alive."
"Hollywood Treasure" shows a company called Profiles In History at work each week. Joe Maddalena and his team search out hot memorabilia from television and film. They often go right to the celebrity sources. The episode of "Hollywood Treasure" that sent Patrick over the edge aired on November 17th. The jacket was an original jacket worn by Patrick as Eddie Munster from season one of the series, and it sold for only $3,500 dollars to an unknown bidder.
During this episode, one of Joe's team is assigned to obtain 60's memorabilia, and she takes it upon herself to find Eddie Munster and get something from him. When her search fails, she finds the author of his biography, Helen Darras, who supplies the company with his jacket. She seemed disappointed the jacket sold for so low during the episode. The series is already doing well for SyFy, and a season two was ordered just last week.
It is completely understandable that the sale of this item upset the actor. It was taken from him by someone he knew, and then sold without his permission. No response yet from SyFy or Profiles in History. "Hollywood Treasure" airs Wednesday nights on SyFy. It is an interesting series to watch, especially if you are a television or film junkie. It is sad to know that one of the auctions on the series has caused someone so much distress. Best of luck to Butch Patrick on a quick recovery and staying clean!
